Fashion to the maxi

The Maxi Dress - one of the most controversial pieces in fashion. We’ve all seen them on the 5’9, size 6 models on runways all over the world, hugging their figures perfectly and enhancing those beautiful willow frames. But for those of us not blessed with the ‘tall and skinny’ gene, we’ve always been more wary. ‘Would it make me look even shorter?’, ‘would I look like I was wearing a long potato sack?’
After summers spent in the usual shorts and skirts I decided it was time to put the Maxi Dress to the test.

What started off as an item only suitable for warm evenings spent at the bar drinking cosmos by a foreign beach, has now evolved into a must have for any girl after that unique look. Big names, such as Katy Perry, have been spotted wearing the Maxi in less glamorous settings, such as Coachella music festival. Pictured below, Katy wears a D&G tiered cream, peach and ivory lace dress, giving her amazing style flexibility and making the look outstanding.

Depending on the design, a Maxi has the potential to elongate the body, giving the illusion of height and slimming the wearer at the same time. I bought mine from Republic for £29.99 (10% off for lucky students!), and fell in love as soon as I tried it on. With its simple design you won’t feel completely on show, and the elasticised waist brings it in on the smallest part of the body, with the long skirt hanging down disguising all those unwanted lumps and bumps. For me it’s the perfect outfit for casual days out and about with friends, especially combined with strappy sandals and big accessories. I would not recommend it as a going out dress however, as you can just picture the scene when someone steps on the bottom of it . . . goodbye dignity!

So for those of you still unsure, pop out today and try one for yourself – you could be pleasantly surprised!
