As the years go by, women begin to subconsciously shrink away from the fashion limelight, opting for comfort and reliability, rather than being experimental with new, exciting styles. Wary of not having that perfect size 8 figure anymore, a lot of women hide their insecurities behind baggy, plain and unflattering clothing. For some it’s become a habit they’ve grown accustomed to over the years, with their younger self inside, just screaming to be let out in those denim hot pants again.
So with the new season fast approaching – ditch those jumpers and get up to date on how being an older woman, doesn’t have to be a bad thing.
Distinguish the right look for your age
A problem a lot of women face is finding the right balance between what makes them look younger, and what makes them look like they’re trying to desperately cling onto their youth. If you’re lucky enough to have beautifully toned legs, then don’t be cautious about wearing skirts. Avoid the mini-skirt (That should go without saying), but go for a skirt that finishes just above the knee, you’ll look sexy whilst not having to worry over flashing too much flesh.
Accessorise, Accessorise, Accessorise
Once again I’ll say it again - the best way to update your wardrobe is by accessorising, especially if you're a little bit timid. Keep your clothes classic but feel free to add a fabulous necklace, beautiful shoes or a great handbag to really push the look.
As you get older, a great and easy way to express yourself is with colour. You’ll find a majority of bold accessories are a relatively cheap and a simple way to experiment. Take a scarf - a long one wrapped around and around, or a little one that you can tie in a very French way around your throat.
Everyone needs the LBD – despite your age!
Ah the classic little black dress, perfect for a majority of occasions. If you're an older woman, make sure it's not too short or too long - you've got to get it just right. Just above the knee is perfect, but it will depend on your body and what looks best on you. Once you have your timeless foundation, build on it with an array of accessories
Don’t be afraid to express yourself
Keeping up with the latest trends is harder as you get older. The key is knowing how to get in touch with your own personal style, and working out what suits you best. Don’t worry about keeping up with fads, but wear things that you love and feel good about. Get shoes that are fun to wear, whether that's because they're a bright colour or an interesting shape. If you like something and you feel good in it, it's probably OK. Don't think too hard - go with your gut reaction.
Bring attention to your best aspects
Lengthen your silhouette - tailored shorts are a very good, grown-up alternative to skirts, and look very chic with a jacket. Try and minimise your least favourite parts by wearing darker colours on them, and playing up your good assets. Women's ankles and wrists are often lovely at any age, so don’t cover them up - show them off with cropped trousers and three-quarter length tops.
